Protecting Your Family’s Health With an Air Purifier

Posted by sereran on May 24th, 2010

Even if you are not allergic to your cat or dog, the presence of pet hair and dander in the home can cause respiratory problems due to constant exposure. If you or someone in your family does have a sensitivity to pet dander, or has a history of asthma, dander in the air can cause extreme discomfort. A high quality air purifier can make your house a home for them again.

Allergens and Pet Dander in the Home

No matter how clean you keep your home, if you have a pet there will be dander in the air. Dander particles are so small that vacuum cleaners cannot entirely remove them all from the carpet, and in fact often simply spread them back out through the air again by agitating the carpet. Dusting has a similar effect on any dander that might have collected on the furniture, shelves, books or knick knacks in your home. Also, whenever your pet moves around the home or makes himself comfortable on the carpet or furniture, more hair and dander is added to what is already there

Because pet dander is so pervasive and difficult to remove from the air, the best solution is an air purifier to complement the work you already do to keep your house neat and clean. With an air purifier, you can be assured that your family will have the best quality, cleanest air you can provide. If you or someone in your family has asthma or allergies, an air filter often can help reduce symptoms and frequency of severe reactions or asthma attacks and greatly improve the indoor air quality of your home.

How an Air Purifier Works

An air purifier works by drawing air through a filter. Most high quality air purifiers use a high efficiency particulate arresting (HEPA) filter that captures very small particulates as the air from the room moves through the filter. HEPA filters also typically include a carbon filter to filter out unwanted gas and odors. Filters vary in size so that you can choose one that will efficiently filter the air in any individual room. Since all the air in the room must move through the purifier in order to be filtered, a larger room will require a larger purifier, or even two purifiers, while a smaller room can be adequately treated with a smaller model.

Advantages of a HEPA Air Purifier

The HEPA air filter is extremely efficient and can make a huge difference in controlling allergens and other unwanted particulates in the air of your home. A HEPA air purifier can remove as much as 99.97 percent of the particulates in the air, keeping your home clean and healthy for you and your family.

When doctors diagnose allergies or asthma, particularly in children, one common recommendation is to add a HEPA filter to help reduce allergy or asthma triggers in the environment. HEPA filters from Austin Air, IQAir or Amaircare are among the highest quality air filters available, and can help you increase your family’s comfort and health.

HEPA Air Purifiers and Allergies – 5 Reasons HEPA Air Purifiers Can Alleviate Allergy Symptoms

Posted by sereran on May 23rd, 2010

For some, allergies are seasonal and symptoms fade when contact with the irritant stops. For others, allergies are ongoing because the triggers are indoors and never go away. Regardless of whether your allergies are acute or chronic, a HEPA (or high efficiency particle arresting) air purifier can alleviate allergy symptoms, and here are 5 ways that it can spell relief for you throughout the year.

Constant Filtration- Probably one of the most important keys to successfully dealing with allergies is consistently doing those things that work for you. Filtering indoor air 24 hours a day is the ultimate in consistency because irritants that trigger your symptoms never have a chance to build to a level that would cause symptoms to flare. And once you plug the cleaner in, it’s one less thing you have to remember. The only way you’ll be reminded that you are filtering your air is by how good you feel around the house.

Can Remove Particulates- The designation– high efficiency particle arresting air purifier– pretty much says it all. It has a 99.97% success rate at removing fine, sub-micron size particulates down to .3 microns. What does that really mean to you around the house? Here are some normal household pollutants with their micron size in parentheses-households dust (10 to .001), dust mites fecal matter (15 to 2), pet dander (10 to .5), mold and mildew spores (10 to 100), human hair (30 to 100), pollen (8 to 100), bacteria (20 to .3, lint (10 to 100), and viruses (.05 to .002), and wood smoke (3 to .007). Filtering your air removes a huge number of triggers that are practically unavoidable indoors. Cleaning the air prevents your body from constantly fighting off these airborne triggers allowing you to rest physically and emotionally.

Can Remove Odors- An efficient allergy air purifier will contain a combination of filters that will not only remove particulates but odors as well. Having a filter within the cleaner that targets odors means that in addition to airborne particulates, you can expect it to remove tobacco smoke and volatile organic chemicals that are triggers for those who are chemically sensitive.

Can Remove a Combination of Irritants-Having a variety of filters all in one purifier means you can remove a large variety of pollutants. And since it is nearly impossible to pinpoint exactly every pollutant that may trigger your allergies, knowing that your air is being cleared of 99,997 out of every 10,000 pollutants as small as .3 microns (which is what a HEPA air purifier does) is a great assurance to have.

Is Compatible with Any Management Plan- If you have seen an allergist to help you manage your allergies, you are probably using a variety of tools, including medications, as part of your management plan. The great part about the right HEPA allergy air purifier is that it is a non-evasive and pro-active tool that greatly enhances any plan for effectively dealing with allergies.

How The Home Air Purifier Wars Took My Breathe Away

Posted by sereran on May 22nd, 2010

Are Infomercial Air Purifiers Over-priced?

I’m not an infomercial consumer.

Maybe that’s because having been an infomercial co-producer I know the markup on most air purifiers is 7 to 9 times the cost.

I’m also not a shopper (my girlfriend says I’m “frugal”) so when I do buy something I do my homework, and find the best price. So when I decided to join the millions of Americans who have purchased an air purifier over the last year it became a journey to “clear the air” in more ways than one.

Having been an asthmatic and allergic person (now cured) I’ve owned many air purifiers for over 30 years. My two reasons for buying an air purifier this time was a layer of black soot that shows up on my L.A. windows every week.

I quickly found 94 air purifier manufacturers (mostly in China, just a few in Europe) and 12 primary technologies to research.

Air Purifier Infomercial Wars

78% of all air purifiers purchased in the U.S. last year were bought via Infomercial. The Sharper Image Ionic Breeze led the way until consumer reports slammed them for over-producing Ozone. Now Oreck XL Professional leads the pack.

Again, the markup is often 7 times the cost. A little $449 home air purifier (Oreck’s best air purifier is $699) made out of plastic, with several metal grids seems a bit too much. And it is. Better to find the exact same one on Ebay or Craigslist for $90 after the person gets it home.

“Manufacturers are battling over whether ozone purifiers, ion purifiers, and the no-replacement-filter-type purifiers are best in the minds of consumers”

The truth is they all work, just some better than others. Many companies practically say Ozone is “evil”, other companies claim it is the best thing since sliced bread. Ozone in small amounts works great, but causes problems at high levels. It’s a nice addition if it is timed. The truth therefore is somewhere in the middle. (I like it to “purge” my room several hours before bed, and for mildew problems it’s the best)

5 things you should know before you buy an Air Purifier

#1: Replacement Filters are Over-Priced

In Japan air purifiers include 2-3 extra replacement filters. WHY? Because the Japanese think ahead.

U.S. manufacturers realize American’s don’t think ahead so they overcharge. Once you purchase an air purifier you’ll be stuck paying what they ask. (Reminds me of my $89 inkjet printer -the replacement cartridges are $28!)

Remedy: Ask for filter prices first. Every 6-12 months you’ll need to change filters. And anything over $25 is too much.

Buying Hint: Ask for a discount on extra replacement filters before buying.

#2: Avoid Purifiers That Say: “No Replacement Filters”

The idea sounds great but once you’ve seen a dirty HEPA filter (HEPA’s are a cloth-like filter which holds dust and pollution) you realize the ones without filters aren’t catching very much dust or pollen – YOUR LUNGS ARE!

“No Replacement Filter Models” include:

Ionic Breeze

Oreck Models (they contradict themselves on their website. You have to replace filters, but they aren’t HEPA)

Remedy - Get an air purifier that has affordable replacements. HEPA is important if you have allergies.

#3: “Fanless” Air Purifiers Won’t Move Enough Air

The ionic purifiers sell you on how quiet they are and how little electricity they use. The problem is they don’t move any air.

(Note; Because of this problem Sharper Image went to fans in their new models)

Remedy: Avoid purifiers without fans.

#4 Avoid Loud Fan Motors

A few people have emailed me that after buying an air purifier they couldn’t sleep.

Remedy: For a super quiet fan ask for one with brushless motors. Read the box for decibel levels. 20-35 decibels is quiet enough for sleep.

#5: It Won’t Do The Square Footage On The Box

I called Oreck when their new $700 tower was listed as covering 1100 square feet. “How Many Times Does It Change The Air In The Room?” (which means how many times it will change all the air in that room).

They didn’t know. Finally a tech said: “One per hour”. That’s poor.

Remedy: Make sure to ask for 4-9 “Changes Per Hour” per Square footage.(You may have to call the manufacturer) Square Footage as listed on the box is also based on an empty room.

How to Choose The Right Technology

Here are some guidelines to match the basic technologies to your needs:

#1 For allergies and asthma, some odors = HEPA, Pre-filter, Neg/Ion, Plasma Grid

(HEPA is still the best for allergies)

#2 For odors, smoke, animal smells, chemical sensitivity, VCO’s, and immune system = Carbon, Charcoal, Ozone

#3 For immune system (colds, flu, viruses, pathogens), and eliminating musty odors UV = TiO2, Plasma Grid, Ceramic

New Sensor Technology

I just reviewed some very cool new technology from Japan that detects pollen, odor and dust. Great for allergy relief. It also saves electricity and guesswork. [SEE THE VIDEO LINK BELOW]

So How Much Should I Pay?”

Shopping online will save you $100-200 dollars right off the bat. You should also look for 5 or more technologies. I encourage you to get HEPA and UV, as they do the best job on allergies and protecting you from viruses, etc.

For a big room I wouldn’t spend more than $275-$350 for a multiple technology unit including HEPA. For a small bedroom maybe $200.

For myself I found a purifier with 9 technologies, including HEPA, UV, ion, sensor technology, washeable filters, Charcoal, for under $350. Twice the technology for half the price of the infomercials.

I suppose I’m breathing better just knowing I saved that much.

History of Air Conditioning

Posted by sereran on May 21st, 2010

It is a wonderful thing to be able to flip a switch, and have an entire room cooled off through air conditioning. Portable room air conditioners make sense when you wish to cool certain parts of your home, office, or covered outdoor living spaces. Air conditioning is commonly found in buildings today, but it was not always the case throughout history.

Wealthy ancient Egyptian families could enjoy the cooling benefits brought from aqueduct water that traversed the insides of walls in buildings. Water was an expensive commodity in that hot region of the world, so only the rich could afford this luxury. Medieval Persians made use of wind towers and cisterns to cool their buildings. Wind would be captured in the wind tower, and it was then directed over the water in the open cistern, which would evaporate and cool the ambient temperature inside the dwelling.

Later on, the idea that liquefied ammonia, when it evaporated, could cool the air was thought up by British scientist Michael Faraday in 1820. In America in 1842, Dr. John Gorrie created a machine to make ice, and he used the ice to cool the air in his hospital in Florida.

Industry was the primary reason that air conditioners were created around the turn of the last century in the United States. Willis Haviland Carrier created the first electrical air conditioner in 1902, which was used to cool and dehumidify the air in a printing plant. The term “air conditioning” was coined by American Stuart W. Cramer in 1906, who came up with a way to add moisture to the air, which was crucial in his textile manufacturing mill.

Toxic gases were used to run the early air conditioners, but Thomas Midgley, Jr. created Freon refrigerant in 1928. Unfortunately, he did not know that Freon is bad for the ozone, and recently newer refrigerants have been developed that are safer for the environment.

Air conditioning is not only used today to make our homes and other buildings more comfortable. You will find air conditioning used in land, water and space vehicles. Air conditioning is used to also filter out bad particles in the air, such as in hospital operating rooms. If you have allergies or asthma, air conditioning can help remove the pollen, dander and dust that causes these conditions to flare up. The elderly can also be at risk if they are in a too-hot building, so air conditioning can be crucial for their well being. Some air conditioners are also dehumidifiers, which take the excess moisture out of the air to make you more comfortable in terms of your temperature. Today we are lucky that a great air conditioner is your answer for cooling comfort.

HEPA Air Purifiers and Babies

Posted by sereran on May 21st, 2010

HEPA air purifiers are practically essential with babies in the house. The air we breathe is composed of many particles such as dust, pollens, mold spores, volatile organic chemicals, smoke, pet dander and others including the nasty dust mites that inhabit our carpets, upholstery, beds and pillows. These particles, when inhaled, go into our lungs and can get into areas where the body cannot filter them out.

Babies are very fragile because their immune systems have not fully developed, and it is therefore important to raise them in an environment with the cleanest air possible. Studies have shown that the air inside our houses is 100 times more polluted than that outside. Largely because of that, more than 50 million Americans visit their doctors annually due to allergies and asthma.

HEPA air purifiers can be used to eliminate the small particles that can enter deep within the bronchial and pulmonary system. Short for High Efficiency Particulate Air filter, by definition they must be able to remove 99.97% of particles of 0.3 microns (with a micron being defined as one ten thousandth of a millimeter) in size in order to legally be classified as HEPA. As such, they remove dust, pollen, mold spores, bacteria, and viruses.

Some air purifiers designed for nurseries can filter over 700 cubic feet of air 24 hours a day. This is an ideal filter for a baby’s room or nursery because they can also absorb noxious gaseous pollutants, and volatile organic chemicals that can off gas from new carpets and fresh paint.

If you notice that your baby gets restless at night, perhaps it is due to difficulty in dealing with the airborne pollutants. Filtering the air should improve your baby’s comfort level almost immediately.

When purchasing a HEPA Air Purifier for your baby or a nursery, keep the following factors in mind to help you choose the correct one for your particular circumstances, as not all are equal.

1. Purchase a unit that removes a high percentage of particulates from the air. Unless it can claim to remove 99.97% of particles of 0.3 microns or less, it cannot be defined as a HEPA. Some might be referred to ‘HEPA-like’ but keep clear of these. They are not the real thing.

2. Know what pollutants you would like to get rid of so you can purchase the air purifier that specifically removes those particles. If you know that dust is your main problem, then look for a HEPA unit that will eradicate dust. Some air purifiers do not remove dust, but will absorb gases, so make sure it says HEPA as well as HEGA.

3. Know how frequently the HEPA Air Purifier filter needs to be replaced and how much it will cost you to do so. A 5 year filter life will save time and money.

4. Make sure you have a 5 warranty, and understand what it covers.

5. Check to see how much maintenance it requires.

Hospitals, nurseries and homes all use HEPA air purifiers to keep babies healthy. Prices are now such that most homes can afford them, and they are certainly extremely effective in removing these dangerous and tiny particles of pollen, dead skin, fibers, pet dander and everything else that makes up the household dust. They will without doubt make a significant contribution to the health of your baby.

The Best Air Purifiers – 3 Features To Check

Posted by sereran on May 20th, 2010

The best air purifiers on the market today have many features that have made them rise to the top in the market place. Here are the top three features that you should check before buying an air purifier. Whether you need an air purifier for allergy, asthma, or just want cleaner air to breathe; checking for these features before you buy will ensure that the air purifier you purchase really is the best air purifier for you.

1. Look for an air purifier that does not produce ozone as a by-product. Some electrostatic air purifiers do emit ozone, and claim that it is not harmful. But, according to the American Lung Association, ozone is dangerous to people and the environment, and can produce lung damage, respiratory disease, and is responsible for outdoor smog when it reacts with sunlight. The state of California plans to ban the sale of home air purifiers that produce ozone by 2009!

2. The most efficient air purifiers are high efficiency particle arresting purifiers (HEPA) that remove 99.97% of airborne pollutants that are bigger than .3 microns, and some even take out pollutants that are bigger than even .1 micron in size. If your air purifier is to be effective in removing allergy and asthma triggers, and pollutants such as dust, dust mites, pet dander, mold and mildew spores, bacteria, and viruses, the HEPA filter is crucial.

3. Air purifiers that have a substantial warranty period are the most likely to last. If the manufacturer really believes that their product will stand the test of time, they will proudly display their warranty period. The best air purifiers have a 5 year warranty, or a prorated filter warranty, and some even have a 10 year warranty period!

Buying an air purifier for you and your family is great way to insure that your family is breathing the freshest, cleanest air possible. Checking for no ozone, a HEPA filter, and a good warranty will assure that you bring home the best air purifier for you.

Cheap Air Purifiers – 5 Ways to Avoid Making Them Expensive Mistakes

Posted by sereran on May 19th, 2010

Everybody wants the most bang for their buck these days, and so we are often asked about the cheapest air purifier. It can only be considered cheap if it does what you want it to, and you purchase it for a good price. If, however, you purchase a purifier for any price, and it does not solve your problem, or solve it in a reasonable amount of time, then it is, in fact not cheap, but an expensive mistake. Here are 5 ways to avoid making a “cheap” air purifier an expensive mistake.

1. Decide how much square footage you need to clean by measuring your space. If your space is 15 feet by 15 feet, you need to clean 300 square feet. Be sure to look for a purifier that will effectively clean that amount of space or even slightly more.

2. Decide on what pollutants to want to remove. A purifier that is designed to remove pet odor might not be as effective in removing airborne chemicals. So check very carefully to see what pollutants its filter is best at removing, and that it matches the pollutants you need to remove.

3. Check to make sure the unit you decide to purchase is made of steel rather than plastic. Those made of plastic generally cost less, but in return some give off fumes that are generated once the motor gets warm. This is called off-gassing. If off-gassing occurs, not only will you have the pollutants that you were trying to get rid of initially, but your “cheap” purifier will actually add pollutants to your environment. You surely do not need to pay money for that.

4. Check to see that the manufacturer or retailer has a reasonable return policy. Trying the cleaner in your space is one of the best ways to see if you have the one that is best for the pollutants you need to remove, and the space you want to clean. A 30-day return policy is generally the standard policy, and will give you time to decide. If a company really believes in their product the return policy will be something they are proud of!

5. Make sure that the purifier you purchase has a really good warranty. Cheap air purifiers might offer a 30 day warranty. But if something goes wrong with the purifier after 30 days and you have no recourse, the air purifier was not cheaper, as you will need to buy another one if you want to clean your air. Cleaners that will stand the test of time are often warranted for as much as 5 years! If you do the math–divide the price of the purifier by 1825 days (the number of days in 5 years), you will see that the cost per day really makes it a cheap.

Once you decide how much space you need to clean, the pollutants you need to remove, check for steel construction, the return policy, and the warranty, you can make the best decision about your purifier, and ultimately get the cheapest air purifier because it will do what you need it to do.
